Singapore’s top-ranking, research-based approach to teaching mathematics has made it to U.S. classrooms. This blog features resource for a professional learning network of educators who use Singapore math in the classroom and want to collaborate and share the instructional strategies that make Singapore math so effective.
The authentic Singapore math pedagogy revolves the idea that fewer topics taught in greater depth at each grade level results in better understanding and retention than methods that tend to teach “a mile wide and an inch deep”. The Singapore math program features visual representations and modeling strategies to solve complex problems; a consistent concrete-pictorial-abstract progression; and strong development of both conceptual understanding, place value, and computational fluency so students that understand the “how” as well as the “why.”
Examples of math content used in blog posts are from Math in Focus: The Singapore Approach (U.S. edition of My Pals are Here! Maths), the most widely used mathematics program in Singapore classrooms today. Math in Focus is published by Marshall Cavendish Education (part of Times Publishing Limited) in Singapore.
