Goodbye Flashcards, Hello SIngapore [New Haven Independent]

Melissa Bailey’s recent article published in the New Haven Independent featuring teacher, Rosalie Carr tells the story behind a school’s successful implementation of Math in Focus.

To tackle the problem, Carr reached into her new toolkit.
She didn’t have kids stare at the textbooks.
She started with something kids can touch.

The article features a Grade 1 lesson and details of how teachers are making the transition away from a “mile-wide, inch-deep” to this focused, in-depth methodology that Singapore math has become known for.

With Singapore math, kids are encouraged not to just spit out answers, but to talk about which strategies they use to arrive at the solution. -Rosalie Carr
